visual displays of socio-political ideas. If you are new to art galleries, Julie shared a tip for how
to experience the art. “Walk around and ask the question, what are you drawn to and why?” She
explained that that simple question allows individuals of all ages to access the art. “It may not
always be that they are drawn to something in a positive way. They may be drawn to a piece because
it scares them or because they hate it, but that’s why art is wonderful. We all experience it in a
different way,” adds Amsberry.
When you are finished in G.A.R. Hall, you can take your newfound eye for art to the Bede Art Gallery
on the campus of Mount Marty College and check out the displays from Mount Marty students and
regional artists. Also at Bede, professional artists often participate in workshops and gallery talks.
For those that are willing to go off the beaten path a bit, there are some non-traditional ways to
view visual art in Yankton too. Willa B’s Bistro and Emporium offers visitors the chance to view
and purchase locally crafted art and other items and grab a scrumptious meal at the same time!
Inside the halls at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, there are many pieces of art displayed. The CramerKenyon house also showcases art from one of the original inhabitants of the home. Admittedly, the
main purpose of visiting any of those locations is not usually to view art, but why not?
No matter how you chose to experience art, the old cliché that there is something for everyone is
absolutely true about the visual art scene in Yankton.
